I finished it today. A lot of deaths, but no one too, too important, except those that everyone knew would die. Some secondary characters (actually, 50 secondary characters) are dead.

Sephia said: so do I. And I think it is the right thing for JKR to do. She SHOULD kill him off... though heroically (please!!!!).
As for Harry, his personality has always annoyed me. Plus, can you imagine Harry in a "happily ever after" type future?? Politicians courting him for his popularity, never a moment without the Wizarding version of the paparazzi, and doing what for a living?? He can't be an auror--every time he gets an order he disagrees with, he will simply do his own thing, and possibly mess everything up, not to mention his impulsiveness and Hero complex... Can you really imagine him HAPPY? or harder yet, content?
Oh - wow Sephia! I had no idea you felt such negativity towards Harry.
I hope you're not too disappointed now that Harry is: alive, happily married, enjoying his life, mentally perfectly sane and complex/phobias-free, with all his beloved friends alive and happy too. Such a shame - I hear ya!
Oh, and Snape unfortunately did not die in a heroic way.
What was Jo thinking??

MsVetra, now, now, don't be mean. I think Sephia is probably just in shock.
Harry is an auror now. In fact, he's the Head of the Auror Office in the Ministry. Ron and Harry have revolutionised the way that the Dark Arts are handled. So, I think it's more Harry giving the orders these days, rather than orders being given to him.
As for Harry being happy. I actuallythink it's easy to imagine that. After all, he has finally got what he always wanted. Remember what he saw in the Mirror of Erised? The image of him standing there with his family around him? Well now, at last, he has that family he never had, and that his heart always desired. So, as I say - I think it's easy to imagine Harry happy now.
MsVetra, I think Severus did die heroically. Harry thought so too - "(Snape was) the bravest man I ever met" he said to little Albus Severus. Snape died doing exactly what he needed to do - letting Harry know what he had to do.

Now now Remarkable, don't be such a naughty little boy.
Let Sephia express her meanings, she's probably perfectly able to do so...
As for Snape dying heroically - well, he just didn't, sorry. He was murdered by The Dark Lord, he didn't have any choice, and it didn't seem to me that he intended to die, when he was so cowardly begging Voldemort to let him return to chasing "The Boy" instead...

This little set of spoilers raises an interesting question, though--how long after the publication of a book or film should people reasonably expect others to keep the "secrets" to themselves?
Movies like The Crying Game and The Sixth Sense relied on twist endings, and they really are better-enjoyed if you don't know the secret during your first viewing. But these movies came out years ago, and by now their twist-endings are practically cliches of pop culture. Pity someone coming to them for the first time today.
With the Harry Potter books there's been a mad rush on the part of diehard fans to get to the bookstores, snap up a copy and seclude themselves so they can read the latest book before anyone spoils it for them. But of course the next day they all want to talk about it with others who've read it, so it becomes increasingly difficult to avoid hearing about it in one forum or another.
The question remains, though--how long can people reasonably be expected to keep a secret like that, without having to worry that they'll spoil someone else's enjoyment of the book or film? Certainly a year later the secrets have become common knowledge, but is the reasonable limit measured in months, weeks, days, or hours?

That's an interesting question, Arras. I can only tell you what I did. I didn't read these forums, and I avoided entertainment pages from other websites. Most news here in the UK were kind enough not to tell too much, and I certainly didn't hear anything. I read it during the 1st week it was out, and til then I made sure I didn't talk to anyone who was going to spoil it for me... At times it was funny, because some people were, for some reason, desperate to tell me, and once I litterally had to run away whilst covering my ears with my hands, LOL!
I thought 1 week was long enough. That was easy. But you're right - for how long can you expect to stay away from any accidental spoilers?
The question remains open...

Snape died, if not in a blaze of battle, doing that what he had to do. And I am not surprised. I think part of him wanted to follow Albus and Lily into the great beyond. His job/task was over. He died well.
As for Harry's happily-ever-after, I am somewhat disappointed by it. I thought the ending saccharine and not in keeping with some of the hints JKR has dropped throughout the series. I am not particularly surprised that she wanted to end the series and get it done, rather than dropping hints to make the fans disappointed. Still, I find the ending a bit simplistic.
I was saddened mostly not by Snape's death, but by those of Tonks and Lupin, who died offscreen, and (dare I say it?) pointlessly. Also, they left behind a son, Teddy, who must grow up without his parents.
Snape died, leaving behind the truth of how he lived. He is remembered by Harry, the son (and godson) of his enemies, as the bravest man he ever met. His task was accompished, his moral debt to Lily paid off (and then some). It was time.

I thought the final book was a great was to close the series, although I agree about Tonks and Lupin's deaths. And there was no mention of what happened to the Sword of Gryffindor.
