Yeah, i have a little replica that came with the movie box set aswell, zink sounds about right, that "antiquing solution" is the same crap they put on door knobs and dead-bolt locks to give them that "old look". Pictures of the larger one make me think it is of simular constuction and material.

Hey Justin
I actually tried contacting you by your web site to put my name down for one of the replicas, but I haven't heard back from you yet... unless it went in my spam (I get about 150 spam email per day)
I'll try again!

Sorry about that. I usually do all my responses to order requests once a day in the morning (my time), and your request came in yesterday after I had finished that activity for the day. But I'm getting to it right now.

Not a problem, I thought it might've been something like that. Being in such different time zones and all
In fact... isn't it approx. 5:30am for you now??

I'll have to take a closer look at the Nobel Collection cryptex. I don't think I'll scratch or dig into it to see if it's zinc, but it could be. It's a lot better quality than the mini cryptex Nobel Collection sells or gives with the box set DVDs. But like I said $200 is a lot to pay for a mass produced item that, although works great and looks great, is not suited for use as an actual safe like Justin's are. Justin's cryptex is solid. You'd have to use a serious hacksaw or drill to open it. It's by far the best design I've seen anywhere and well worth the price.
Justin, the idea of leaving the brass on yours to naturally age is a great idea. That could end up looking really cool. Let me know how your tests go. I'll be interested in something like that! I also love the pictures on your web site of the brass cryptex with Masonic symbols on it. That one in a natural brass or aged brass would be awesome.

the idea is if you unscrew the endcap on the key with it removed from the lock, the inside of the cap is not visible from the outside, scratch it there.

I've been following this thread for a few weeks now, I found it while searching for cryptex info. I'm starting my own cryptex project soon and hope to have it done in the next 2 months. I will be "blogging" my progress here:

Thanks to everyone for all the inspirations.

I created my own blueprints for a cryptex...it doesn't look exactly like the Da Vinci code one...but it is pretty much the same thing. Also...if you will create this...make it exactly how i have it...one thing changed can and will mess it up. You might as well print out the pictures and lay it over top of the wood and make it to exact size. The size of the cryptex is aimed to be (diameter of circle discs is 3 & 7/8 inches. The stationary wheel segments (labeled later) are have the same diameter for the inner circle...this must stay the same for all discs...but the exterior portion is about 3 to 3.25 inches) If you get it to this size circle cutout will be a breeze to get size of...the length of the finished cryptex is 8 & 3/4 inches) ...if it does not print that size..then you will have to create a scale on the paper to get it to size...unless you like it that size.
All the pictures are below...Look at them in order.
1)This is the picture showing the end cap...which as you will see in the remaining pictures, this is the cap that holds everything together...not the cap that pulls out with the message storage tube. http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p241/aerogineer/endcap1.jpg
2) This is the final end cap completed the grey shows that it is the end and it is a thick piece. http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p241/aerogineer/endcap1final.jpg
This picture below just shows how dedicated I was to get perfect alignment, so you know this will work.
http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p241/aerogineer/endcap1lignup.jpg
3)This is also the diagram for the stationary wheel segments http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p241/aerogineer/endcap1.jpg
4)This is the diagram for the rotating chypher disc http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p241/aerogineer/cypherdisc1.jpg
5)This is the diagram for the actual piece that contains your message/item and the unlocking prongs http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p241/aerogineer/endcap2prong.jpg
it is at an angle but you can get the exact side view from the next picture and the front view is the same as the first picture
6) This is the final from the side view...the descriptions in the picture pretty much say everything
