Dan Brown Exonerated by Appeals Court new
      #8663 - 03/27/07 09:20 PM

The Court of Appeals in London has exonerated Dan Brown over the 'Da Vinci Code copyright claim', by dismissing the appeal by Michael Baigent and Richard Leigh against the court decision last year which ruled in favour of Dan Brown and Random House (over B&L's claim that Brown plagiarised their work Holy Blood, Holy Grail).

Kind regards,
Greg

Don't worry, he'll be sued again soon.

You mean like this?

After reading this story, I'm convinced he has no chance of a trial...there seems very little to nothing which wasn't general knowledge well beforehand, and he's even got a bit of a Fundie devil versus Christianity thing happening. One aspect of the court case is supposedly "the use of material written in accord with church teaching that was changed to alert its meaning." Huh?

He goes on to say that he is "offended twice fold because in my mind Dan Brown has used my mental creations and twist(ed) them around and used them to suggest the possibility of Jesus Christ having been married to a saint." I think the crucial words there are "in my mind".

Kind regards,
Greg

Oy. Don't they ever get tired of it? It's getting really stupid, and this guy has no chance whatsoever...

I suspect that for some people with particularly deep religious convictions it becomes a matter of religious duty to protest against what they see as "blasphemy" and/or "heresy". Winning in court would be great, but they're in it for their own salvation more than anything, I gather. They're afraid of having to explain themselves at the Pearly Gates when they're asked, "why did you let Dan Brown's blasphemy stand unopposed?" This way, whether they win or lose in court, they can die with clear consciences, knowing that they tried, that they spoke out. It can be a very strong faith-affirming gesture for someone with such beliefs, I imagine.

More cynically, I suppose it could be a strategy intended to deter other authors from treading on sacred ground by demonstrating that it will ultimately lead to wave after wave of nuisance lawsuits. Never mind that the suits get thrown out most of the time, there's still a hassle and a legal expense involved in defending against them. Most smaller publishers won't want to get involved with a project that's likely to be that much of a drain on their time and resources. And if you're an author trying to decide between a project that will leave you persecuted for the rest of your life and one that will earn you less money and fame but let you live in peace, it gives you more to think about when these lawsuits keep making the news.

I'm just pissed off that Dan Brown used my mental creations and became a multi-millionaire. I am pretty proud of the fact that my mental creations were made into a movie. I'm still poor, but my mind SO rocks!
