I am going out on a limb here but after reading this book I have come to an interesting conclusion. Dan Brown or some combination of him and his wife is/are John Twelve Hawks. The writing style is similar, the descriptions feel the same and the pacing also follows pattern. Considering that they share the same editor at Doubleday and NO info can be found on John Twelve Hawks b/c he lives "off the grid" makes it all the more suspicious. Perhaps Brown is pulling the old Stephen King/Richard Bachman move in order to put his naysayers to rest. It would just seem odd that Kauffman (the editor) would take on such a project where he had to communicated with a first time author in such odd manners if there wasn't something more to it...perhaps this is also the underlying reason behind the delay of "The Solomon Key."

I'll delete the other one, but I think this thread fits in with the conspiracy theories.

Moved from, uh, thread #3 for John Twelve Hawks. We don't have a merge feature.

Most people are just happy to be able to IMAGINE a life off the grid. But we've got to pay our cable TV and other bills so, hi ho, hi ho, it's off to the salt mines. On the other hand, you may be right about John 12 Hawks http://aolsvc.bookreporter.aol.com/reviews2/038551428X.asp since someone is playing games with the media and our heads.
I'd just like to see a plausible secret society with actual realistic goals. Freemasons once could do that; now, I'll settle for E Clampus Vitus !

You know my opinions on Brown and his writing inability but:
I'm inclined to agree with the notion that Brown is the author of this mess: it's full of falsehoods, mistakes, cardboard characters, telling and not showing, repetitive junk, and not an English lesson learned on any page.
Obviously he didn't want to write a new Langdon brick in the meantime and his publishers wanted a book to put out but, since a second Brown would annoy the market for the paperback release of The Da Vinci Code, it makes sense to put out a new one under a false name.
Also, for those that hated The Da Vinci Code and vowed never to read Brown again, they have the advantage of books by Brown under a different name which means those people may part with their cash again.

bump..
I am reading this right now - didn't know there was a thread. Anyway I'm not sure it's Brown. Same editor but not sure - who knows. I will say I think the style is similar in that the pace is fast and the story is well-woven with clues here and there.
I particularly like the theme of this - never knew much about the whole "off the grid" aspect - and now I"m fascinated. I want to learn as much as possible about various surveillance methods and stuff like that. Like tracking people and matching identity etc. Very cool. Anyone reading it right now?
