I think the end makes some pretty big leaps of faith at the end, though.... I think that while he makes a good case for it being technically possible, that doesn't prove that it really happened.

I strongly recommend "The Messianic Legacy" by the same authors when you're done reading "Holy blood, holy grail" It is the sequel to “Holy blood, holy grail” and together, they make more sense. After I put down the first one, I felt there wasn’t an ending to the book. I’m halfway through the second one and things started to make sense… Although, I think these are the kinds of books that should be read more than once to be fully understood.

Different yet similar… it explores the religious part from Jesus’ time and up and how religion was used to control masses or disguised as a theory for the same goal. They also try to explain symbolism… I didn’t finish the book yet, and I don’t have a full-formed opinion about it...

"Holy Blood, Holy Grail" is a very well researched book. The authors are definetly confident in their research. This is both good and bad. The authors are so confident in their research in that they sometimes have trouble explaining their conclusions. However, you can still get through the book with a general understanding through the heaviness. I am currently reading "The Templar Revelation" and it is a good brush up of all the theories revealed in "Holy Blood, Holy Grail." HBHG was a very thought provoking read, however, the only thing that gets me, is the fact that both books rely heavily on the "secret dossiers" and the sketchy history of the priory of sion. They are both interesting and enteraining reads, a good adendum to "Da Vinci Code," however there is no smoking gun that really connects all the theories.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the guy who first claimed that the Priory existed (Pierre Plantard) admit it was a hoax over ten years ago?

I saw a docymentry about DVC where they were talking about this book and as I understand it DB built some of his theories around it. But one of the authors denied that the Priory of sion was real, they had just made them up?

That was later. At the time of the publishing of Holy Blood, Holy Grail, the authors believed that the Priory was real.

I've read the book, thought it was hokum and found it mentioned as a hoax at

"Pierre Plantard began writing a manuscript and produced "parchments" (created by his friend, Philippe de Cherisey) that Father Bérenger Saunière had supposedly discovered whilst renovating his church. These forged documents purportedly showed the survival of the Merovingian line of Frankish kings. Plantard manipulated Saunière's activities at Rennes-le-Château in order to "prove" his claims relating to the Priory of Sion."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Priory_of_Sion

But hey, don't let facts EVER get in the way of a good storyline ! Dan Brown would have done much better to have written about Graham Hancock's The Sign and The Seal
http://www.grahamhancock.com/library/sats/default.htm

The tie-ins with Brown's new book The Solomon Key could make for a great almost-true novel if the information on the Ark of the Covenant is included and the Knights Templar connection is fully exploited, and not stupidly as with the movie National Treasure.

No, but the thesis of the Holy Grail as a metaphor for the Ark of the Covenant--as Hancock's book shows--is more reality-based than Dan Brown's DVC 'Jesus's bloodline san gral' theory.

I will continue to shamelessly promote Hancock's book along with the works of the late John J. Robinson especially since they tie so directly with Knights Templar/Ark/Freemason threads. I highly recommend them.

I certainly do not feel well versed enough to participate in this conversation however, I recently obtained Holy Blood, Holy Grail and am finding it a very challeging and factually overloaded. I am only a 1/3 of the way in. I was expecting something different. I will finish it and trudge through but I still find myself referring back to DVC as a reference. Brown's research was very well done and he introduced material and ideas I had never thought of before. A new world has been introduced and I want to experience as much of it as I am able to form an educated opinion. Anyone else find this material in HBHG rough?

I am not sure, but I know I am overwhelmed with information and have a notebook with subtitles to keep everything straight. I guess I was shocked to learn I did not know as much as I originally thought. I have always been interested in this subject matter but was a little overwhelmed.

If you want more alternative Jesus theory then, if you can find it, Holger Kersten's Jesus Lived In India is a worthwhile read and provides actual evidence (sometimes even physical) for his case unlike the speculation and conclusions jumped to by Baigent et al; a move that ultimately made them a mockery.

I used www.abebooks.com for my copy of Kersten's book; got it from a bookshop in India for less than the price I'd have paid in the UK - including posting and packaging.

Thanks I may just check it out. I had no idea there where so many books and material on the subject matter. One item leads to two others which branches off and leads to yet another theory and idea. I feel as if I have only scratched the surface. Can't wait to dive deeper.

Hello EVDebs,

Mr Hancock's book TS&TS does not make a case for the Grail being a metaphor (or otherwise)for the Ark of the Covenant.
Any inferences by authors that Freemasonry is a continuation of the Knights Templar is pure speculation. Any suggestion of a connection between the Ark of the Covenant, the Knights Templar, and Freemasonry is downright ludicrous.
As for this 'thing' called the Grail, it remains an abiding mystery with many attributes.
Rosey

RoseyORyan

Sorry to say but Graham Hancock's The Sign and The Seal DOES make the case for the Holy Grail legend being a metaphor for the Ark of The Covenant. Aside from reading the TS&TS, please see also Templar Gold by Patrick Byrne reviewed at

http://www.seekerbooks.com/prod/9781577330998/

and ask why this comment is made in the review:

""Not since Hancock's Sign and the Seal has so plausible and logical a theory been put forth involving the Templars and the Ark of the Covenant. In fact the publication of this book may well see many Hancock supporters changing their thinking, including Mr. Hancock himself." Stephen Dafoe, Grand Historian for the Sovereign Great Priory of Canada Knights Templar "

It seems there IS a connection with KT, Freemasonry and the Ark.

BTW, ever wonder why the Acacia tree (source of Shittim wood as mentioned in the Bible) is VERY relevent to the Knights Templar and modern day Freemasons ? Here's why

http://www.glnb.ca/historian/history_aug_04.html

and

http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/view.jsp?artid=709&letter=A

Also, in TS&TS it shows that medieval stonemasons carved into the Cathedral at Chartres a strange reference to Ethiopia...and in Ethiopia itself remnants of Templar symbols show up at places where the Ark is reported to have been kept.

Please re-read The Sign and The Seal more carefully ! Oh, and this review of Templar Gold also includes historic linkages to follow

http://www.templarhistory.com/ark.html

verifying my contentions. My only disagreement with Byrne is WHERE the Ark of the Covenant ended up. His speculation is somewhere in Europe; Hancock's is that it is in Axum, Ethiopia. Either way, the Grail Legend links up with the Knights Templar and by extension modern-day Freemasons.
