Two of my all-time favourite books are "The Wars" and "Not Wanted on the Voyage", both by Canadian author Timothy Findley. "The Wars" would meet the requirement of "historical fiction", as it's the tale of a young man from a privileged family who volunteers to fight in WW1. This book always comes to mind as Armistice Day/Remembrance Day/November 11th approaches each year. It was required reading in my 12th grade high school English class, and it left a lasting impression.
Another book by Findley, "Not Wanted on the Voyage", is on my list of "Favourite Books of All Time". Unfortunately it's out of print, so I guess others didn't feel that way. You can probably still dig up a copy of it through www.bookfinder.com or www.half.com, however. The novel is Findley's interpretation of the Noah's Ark parable. It's harsh, funny, and occasionally violent, and I've read my copy so many times that the pages are falling out and the binding has disintegrated. An ex-girlfriend who didn't enjoy reading at all still managed to read "Not Wanted on the Voyage" and she liked it too. That's really saying something.
