Saunière placed a lot of confidence in Langdon. Was this confidence well-placed? What other options might Saunière have had? Did Saunière make the right decision separating Sophie from the rest of her family?

The confidence was a little bit "optimistic", considering that Saunière and Langdon had never met! It would have almost seemed more appropriate for Saunière to suggest that Sophie contact Teabing as someone knowledgeable in relevant history. Surely Saunière was as familiar with Teabing as he was with Langdon.
Of course, Langdon was already somewhat infamous for his role in the Vatican conclave. Perhaps the fact that the Pope found him trustworthy made Saunière believe that he would be the best person for the job.

Well, it may be that Saunière would not have trusted langdon if he hadn't been so desperate. He had to tell his secret, and Sophie would not have figured it out on her own. So, he had to trust someone else. Whether he knew of Teabing or not is questionable, but he did see Langdon's book and knew that Langdon could possibly be the right person. He didn't really have the time to mull it over for long, so, he chose Langdon. Yes, it was riské, but the guy really WAS desperate, he had all of 15 minutes...

I'm assuming this had a great deal to do with Saunière's confidence in Langdon, not to mention he seemed to be a better all around symbologist than Teabing. Perhaps Langdon was chosen for his versatility.

I doubt it was just "versatility" after all, that's one BIG secret... it could be that reading Langdon's book convinced him, but I think it was at least partly desperation.
