Well, think of this: There are books all over the place that are simply compolations. The bible, I think, Is a compolation of morals. Compolations such as these can help people understand the morals. If you don't understand things you may not follow it all the time. Without something telling you killing is bad, you'll decided that it is for yourself, but since something gave you a reason and consequence that you didn't think of, you're not going to go kill someone because you want something of theirs...or you still might, but then you're just weird.

Maybe, but what if the only reason I have not killed anyone is that I never had a reason important enough to overcome the annoyance of getting a gun, stalking them, killing them, cleaning up... not to mention the tedious trial and jail sentence? ;-)

Yeah, ick, imagine the cleanup. I eat bbq ribs with one hand because I can't stand to have both hands be sticky. There's no way I'm killing anyone if I have to clean up. And prison life just doesn't agree with me - I don't like early mornings and schedules. Gee, maybe I haven't committed any crimes because I'm lazy, not because it's wrong. <shrug> Oh well.

I can't live without science because without science, I wouldn't have this here computer thingamabob or my beloved TiVo...and we wouldn't even be having this conversation because none of us would've ever met, living thousands of miles apart and all.

Man made religion, God inspired faith. Those who don't believe in gods still believe in a higher power.

Unless believing in nature or something, is believing in a "higher power", I don't believe in a higher power. I'm evil and faithless, I admit.

I'm quite naive, but evil? Nah.

wow, I'm confused....
Define "Higher power". Do you mean one with a physical manifestation, or just a sort of over-spirit, or the divine watchmaker.....?

That's interesting - I don't need science or religion to inspire me to be a better person. The joy of just being nice to others is enough for me. I don't believe in any religion (I'm a cultural Jew, but completely non-religious), I don't believe in any gods and yet, I somehow manage to be nice to others, rescue unwanted animals, donate money to charity, etc. Why do you need religion to inspire you to do those things?

Who says that the rescue of unwanted animal and donating money to charity is right and should make you feel better about yourself? Society. A society based on what? Religious preachings. Religious interpretations. Laws created with those religious interpretations in mind. Maybe killing those animals is actually what God wanted instead of you rescuing them? I'm not attacking you personally. I'm just saying that what makes you feel good is based on religious manipulation. From a scientific standpoint.......I hope you spay and neuter the animals you rescue!

<<Maybe killing those animals is actually what God wanted instead of you rescuing them?>>

And see, this is where I get to use my own beliefs. I think helping people/animals is a good thing to do. Just because I have views that may coincide with religious teachings, doesn't mean they come from said teachings.

All of my animals are spayed/neutered, even the rare Anatolian Shepherd who would have gorgeous genes to pass along.
