My science teacher once told me that religion is not real, it is a BELIEF. If people want to believe in God, then that is fine, but does that affect the way that they see the universe? Everyone talks about the universe being created in the Big Bang, everyone talks about the human race being derived from evolution. What are religious children meant to learn about then? Another thing, why do all non-religious people use the Christian calender?

Ahh, but both the big bang theory and the theory of evolution are just that--theories. Personally, I find probems with both. With evolution, what about the missing link? why aren't there any monkey-men around, except in hollywood? As for the big bang, it doesn't actually show how the universe came to be. I get the expanding and contracting bit, but originally, how could it be? If matter is neither created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction, where did it all come from? Why do we use the Chrsitian calendar? 'cause no one is really sure when the world began, and besides, saying its the year 25 billion, 300 million, 762 thousand 895 is way too complicated. I guess you could use the Jewish calendar, but we all know the world is much more than 5771 or something like that years old.

There really are people who are hairy like that. Also, recently monkeys were caught on video (robbing a liquor store! - okay, that's what it was starting to sound like) using tools. Not only did they use the tools they made out of sticks, they also saved them and carried them to use elsewhere. So, it wasn't like they just happened to pick up a stick and use it, then drop it where they found it. I'll have to go find the story -- the video was on the news and it was pretty interesting. I wonder what they'd be capable of if they were given proper tools...or access to more than just what they can find in the jungle.

Here we go, from the National Geographic site, although this doesn't seem to describe the same video I saw:
Animal Behavior
Tool Time, Monkey Style No nut's too tough for rock-wielding capuchins
Tool use was once touted as a key thing that separates human from beast. But in truth, lots of other animals use tools, from apes to birds to bugs. Recently scientists caught a glimpse of wild monkeys using tools in a surprisingly sophisticated way.
The monkeys, brown capuchins (Cebus apella), tool around in a remote dry forest in northeastern Brazil. After laying tough-shelled palm nuts on sandstone slabs, the monkeys stand up—sometimes using their tails for support—raise rocks perhaps half their own weight head high, then slam the nuts. Not content with any old hammer, the monkeys will haul a favorite rock to the "anvil" site, says photographer Pete Oxford. They also place nuts in small pits from previous hammering and sniff them between strikes to see if the kernel is exposed yet. Older capuchins are the best nut crackers, but young ones also try their hand.
"These monkeys are acting in ways we once thought only apes did," says primatologist Dorothy Fragaszy of the University of Georgia, who plans to study the monkeys' tool use in detail.
And since capuchins are only distantly related to apes, she says, their ability must have evolved independently.
"Their Schwarzenegger dead lift is amazing to see," says Charles Munn, a zoologist with Tropical Nature (a nonprofit ecotourism group) who first learned of the hammer wielders from locals. "But it's no surprise the monkeys have to work hard to get food in such a marginal, scrubby habitat."

Yes, the Big Bang and evolution are just theories, but people have come to think and accept that these theories are actually accurate. Especially the Big Bang, this is what is taught in schools all around the world.
There are numerous other theories regarding the beginning of the Universe, but the Big Bang theory has stuck - many books have been written on it, seemingly with astonishing accuracy. Moreover, a lot of evidence has been found to support it. Scientists claim that they know what the Universe was like during the first millionth of a second after this supposed explosion. Research has shown that the Universe is expanding rapidly - cosmic material is speeding further and further away from us at as much as 300,000km/s.
As for the origins of life on Earth, I'm not really sure. I'm not entirely convinced with Charles Darwin's theory of evolution - I might need to research further into that. There are several theories surrounding this topic too. For example, Panspermia, but a lot of holes exist in this.
If you think about it, we might not ever know the answers to what we want to know about the Universe. The best we can do is to come up with theories. But even if you can compile vast amounts of the most convincing evidence to support a theory, then there are still going to be people who disagree and come up with new ones etc. There is no-one to tell us whether we are right or wrong, so we will never know the truth about the beginning of life and the Universe.

Where would you expect to find pictures of bodies evolving, except in cave drawings?

Relgion is nothing but a belief. But guess what, your SCIENCE teacher told you that. religion vs. science...hmmmmmmm. Also wtf is up with everyone going on about the big bang and evolution? The truth is, no one can prove, in any way, how the world began, or if we evolved, god put us here or whatever. Yes the big bang and evolution are theories and nothing more, but they at least have some evidence to support themselves, where as what does adam and eve have to support them......hmmmmmm....the bible? I personally, think the bible is full of so much loop holes that if god really did speak to those ppl, then he is not a very thorough person. but thats besides the point. The point is millions and millions of people believe in it. And what about other religions sacred texts? nobody talks about those. They may have more truth in them than any of the aformentioned theries. So next time everyone asks how to prove evolution or where the pics are,if the big bang is true or not, or anything else ludicrous like that, please tell them to shut up.

Yes, but we also learnt about the Big Bang in our Religious Education lessons. My point is why if we do not know the accurate truth about anything do we have to learn about it?

that is a good point. didnt we have to answer questions in the RE exam about evolution and the big bang theory?
