Angels & Demons: Travel Ideas
      #42 - 10/21/03 07:09 PM

Who would I have to bribe to have free time in the Vatican library? The thought of all those historical pieces makes me salivate. I got goosebumps seeing original pages of "The Diary of Anne Frank" years ago -- I can't imagine how I'd feel seeing original writings of Galileo which were hundreds of years old, or other important documents which are thousands of years old.

In any case, I'd now be interested in visiting Vatican City. I'd never really thought about it before, but now I look at it in a whole new light.

To have free access... <sigh> Talk about the trappings of power! I'd want to see evrything OFF the tourist circuit and see the REAL treasures...

Oh well - not in this lifetime....

hmm, I would recommend bribing the pope and all the cardinals and etc. Or, just the guards guarding it. of course you could always break in.....

If I was close enough to bribe the pope, I'd probably shoot the bastard.

Actually, a friend of mine studied history and was an exchange student in Italy... and she got access to the library. Maybe I should ask her? I haven't spoken with her for ages, hmm... maybe it would be a good excuse to contact her.

And I agree, I'd love to see those original writings, too. Mmmmmmmm....

Sounds good to me, though I doubt anyone is given full clearance...just partial, i'd guess.

It would seem to me that all articles and books and whatnot should be scanned and cataloged into a database for access by everyone. But I'm sure the church would want people to find out what they have tried so hard to cover up. But I would love to see it as an online library, for free or small fee. It's been done elsewhere...

You could sneak in whilst conclave is happening, or just lock them all in there forever unless they let you in....

the only problem with that is...you have to wait for the next conclave, which could be ages away

Well, as someone else said, the Pope is almost dead anyway. Alternatively, we could lure them all into the Sistine Chapel (or wherever conclave is held) with chocolate cake.

He's actually been dead for the last year - his hands are now attached to strings which someone tugs when they want him to wave.

I wish I could look around in there...first, though, I'll have to finish learning French and start on Spanish, Italian, and Latin.

That is what realy makes me hate a lot of organised religions, I am a data-crat - I value the truth higher than anything - including the lives of most human beings (myself included) I regard people who atempt to bolck access to the truth in the same way most poeple regard mass-murderers - lock them up and throw away the key!

6. Undergraduate students are not admitted into the Archives.

Darn! Well, that takes me out. or, at least for a few years.... hmmmmmmm.

17. Silence must be observed in all parts of the Archives. Please dress with discretion.

This one just makes no sense to me. I mean, who cares, especially if only one "Researcher" is allowed in at a time!

Says who?

For your information, the Vatican Museums are the major touristy attraction in Rome (all you have to do is stand patiently in a massive queue for a couple of hours).
Even the Sistine Chapel itself is open to the public and is such a stunning masterpiece, that even an atheist and agnostic like myself had to stare in wonder and I almost (I enphatize ALMOST) felt like there was something devine about that place. Hard to describe, I guess it's one of those moments in life when you really do ask yourself some of the BIG questions.

While it is true that much of the Vatican is open, much, much MORE is inaccessible to just about everyone.

didn't you read the freakin book? everything that the illuminati wrote was in english!!! lengua pura, because the church didn't speak english. The church wanted to burry the illuminati and they did. along with their history. that's why the illuminati, in combination with the fact that they were so secretive in the first place and the fact that people today only care about pop culture, dont exist in the minds of those who haven't read the book, thanks to Dan Brown, except for illuminati enthusiasts and scholars. but how many of those do you know? really?

Haven't read the book but just want to highlight the folly of this statement. Each Pope is not identical; they have their own opinions on issues such as abortion, homosexuality, politics, etc. that can change the way masses of the world's population think and act.

Well not really. The voting system is designed to provide continuity and to prevent change.

I'm not really sure about my next summer holidays. I will either walk along St. James Path to Santiago de Compostela or I will go to Rome and visit some churches and Vatican City.

Hehe, maybe when I am a minister in some years I will go to the secret archives
