Dunno if the higher up's noticed, but on the main entrance, the left coulmn, at the very bottom contains a "custom box 1" that doesn't have anything in it. It gives info about how the site is set up though, and that can be a security probelm, you might want to put something in there or remove it. Just figured I'd let you know if you didn't ^_^

We know it's there. We haven't gotten around to it. I also can't see how it's a security problem. If anyone hacks into this site, all they'll get is this message board. Not terribly exciting.

I removed it -- I just kept forgetting to shut it off.

:P alrighty. I just wanted to make sure you knew. And hey, some hackers get board and like to deface stuff, I've had it happen to "Just a forum", trust me, it sucks to lose all your posts and things that you worked so hard to get.

We have daily database backups on two different servers which is why we're not overly concerned about hackers, and tend to take a "que sera sera" attitude. I had noticed the custom box on a few occasions but we run two other boards which are really busy, and this one unfortunately often takes a back seat.

What are the two others and their subject matter?

One is just a private board that we've had for years with our friends. The other is an official site for an actress who was on Season 7 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It's a long story of how that came about and how it nearly made us brain dead...and cost a fortune. Like Skate, probably lots of the kids (and they are mostly 15-19 year olds) think we're evil control freaks, but we've seen other sites like that spiral out of control. Those who stay and become regulars appreciate the simplicity of the board, although it has a lot more features than this board simply because it's busier and has almost 6000 registered users. It's been an incredible learning experience and the site grew at an alarming rate when we first started it - often 50+ users signing up per day. And we run it for free.
That said, we've learned a lot and have gotten interesting views from kids from all over the world. Many of them post in English as their second (or third or fourth) language, and it's been fun to watch their English improve so much over the past 18 months. Plus, we learn things about their countries that we would never learn otherwise, except by traveling there ourselves.

Lol, I don't think you're control freaks, there is a certain level of control needed, I just think that a couple of the things are pointless, but that just happens to be my opinion ^_^. But that's cool how you've learned so much through a forum like that. The "intar-web" is a great place to learn things, especially from people themselves. Do you think you could post the link to that second board so I can check it out. I won't sign up since I have no clue who it is, but I'd at least like to take a look at it.

Is running something like this an experience you have enjoyed?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. This board, for the most part, has been really enjoyable. Very few problems. Our other board, there have been days that we've wanted to pull our hair out and shut the whole thing down. It's quieter there now though. So, if you're looking at boards as a way to exchange information with people all over the world and make new friends, it's great. If you're looking at them as a way to make money...this isn't the place to look. There aren't that many boards around who are able to sustain themselves financially, much less become someone's main job.

I'll second that with respect to making money off of forums. It will be interesting to see if the money I'm making off mine (albeit a trickle of cash) will jump in quantity once I finish my main site.

Not likely. There are very very few forums that make much money. The ones that do offer very specific technical and up-to-date information and have huge numbers of members. But, if you can make it, more power to ya.
