The "Kryptos" Statue
      #6686 - 02/13/06 05:47 AM

I thought the code on "The DaVinci Code" bookcover lead to a statue of a Greek god on the CIA's lawn or something. lol
But it turns out ta be a sculpture of a code ....
And this straight from the source themselves! lol

I want to see what dan brown makes of the final yet unsolved cryptic code. I am so sick of waiting, I am currently studying the completed first 3 riddles, trying to make up a idea for the fouth to use in a novel length solomon key fanfiction

I thought, to stimulate conversation on this belived element of the next robert langdon book, I thought I would post some information on the statue, including the 3 currently solved codes, the 4th one still unsolved, even by the CIA who has people who spend time on Kryptos during their free time.

the first three codes were solved a while back, and they feature very intriuding, vague, and for me, alluring mysterys.

Solution 1:
BETWEEN SUBTLE SHADING AND THE ABSENCE OF LIGHT LIES THE NUANCE OF :IQLUSION

Solution 2:
IT WAS TOTALLY INVISIBLE HOWS THAT POSSIBLE ? THEY USED THE EARTHS MAGNETIC FIELD X THE INFORMATION WAS GATHERED AND TRANSMITTED UNDERGRUUND TO AN UNKNOWN LOCATION X DOES LANGLEY KNOW ABOUT THIS ? THEY SHOULD ITS BURIED OUT THERE SOMEWHERE X WHO KNOWS THE EXACT LOCATION ? ONLY WW THIS WAS HIS LAST MESSAGE X THIRTY EIGHT DEGREES FIFTY SEVEN MINUTES SIX POINT FIVE SECONDS NORTH SEVENTY SEVEN DEGREES EIGHT MINUTES FORTY FOUR SECONDS WEST X LAYER TWO

Solution 3:
SLOWLY DESPARATLY SLOWLY THE REMAINS OF PASSAGE DEBRIS THAT ENCUMBERED THE LOWER PART OF THE DOORWAY WAS REMOVED WITH TREMBLING HANDS I MADE A TINY BREACH IN THE UPPER LEFT HAND CORNER AND THEN WIDENING THE HOLE A LITTLE I INSERTED THE CANDLE AND PEERED IN THE HOT AIR ESCAPING FROM THE CHAMBER CAUSED THE FLAME TO FLICKER BUT PRESENTLY DETAILS OF THE ROOM WITHIN EMERGED FROM THE MIST X CAN YOU SEE ANYTHING Q (?)

X's seem to have been used as spaces, in some way inplace of periods. we learned more about this when it was revealed that sanborn, the artist who made the sculpture omited a X for astethic reasons.

according to wikipedia *where the above is from* the 3rd is a reference to howard carter opening king tuts tomb. A strangely random thing, but we were told that to solve the statue completely, you had to solve a riddle in a riddle that cant be solved until all four clues are decrypted.

we know dan brown is a very creative person, and with three of the clues decrypted, I feel certain we can expect that dan brown, if kryptos those feature, will include a fictional clue 4, which may very well help our hero understand what conspiracy is happening.

i have heard a theory that once all four codes are solved, it forms the first riddle that has to be decyrpted by the four clues in some fashion. then, that riddle has to be solve, revealing another riddle. it all seems really complicated to me, but I really think it might make for a great read.

well, if in the real world, it has no value other then artistic value, thats not really why I brought it up. I brought the information up to spark discussions of how dan brown might use the statue in the book, as it seems likely he will.

I wish I had some kind of answer to your questions CMWarren. Unfortunately, I'm stumped. I'm sure that, whatever way Dan Brown decides to use them, it will be very creative, thought-provoking and (Dare I say it?) ORIGINAL!

I have been working on a fanfiction idea, and this is a issue that is causing my alot of obsession. Dan Brown has a amazing talant for taking something, and making this thrilling plot element.

I have been trying to think of ways one could use it.

they are three seemingly random phrases.

the statue itself is a riddle within a riddle that cant be solved until all four codes are cracked.

it almost seems like it was designed in a way that once a person cracks the fourth code, they have to combine them in a way to find a word or anwser to the riddle that would be used in decoding the statue again to find the final riddle.

I am enjoying the challange, but still, how could this play into the book. Dan Brown gave us a enigma not even the CIA has been able to solve. only WW knows the anwsers, and he retired as head of the CIA a while ago.

I found out the lattitude longittude codes acutally point to a area in the courtyard where the statue itself stands.

I find the 2nd code to be the most intriguing. A reference to something hidden.

the third makes me think of national treasure for some reason.

I autally spent a few hours pouring through a series of attempts at cracking the fourth code, and though I barely understood it, it really was amazing to see the lengths people were trying to go to crack it.

Wow, seems like you are really determined to find the answer. I would love to read your fan fiction when you are done. I wish I were intelligent enough to help you with that one. I love codes and the like because, unfortunately, im not great at solving them without a little help.

its a little frustrating. I am not a cyptographist, or whatever the proper term is, so I am just stretching my imagination and creativity to find a way to make a beliveable solution and way the solution was found.

I cant deconstruct and present something that would take the actual last series of letters. I even tried useing very basic forms of codebreaking to turn the 93 letters remaining unsolved into letters that could be used as sounds that could be clues to sounding out words, finding the letters needed to make the words, and creating a solved version.

my big problem is whats stumping everyone. one could say the real solution is really complicated, however I have read many people postulating that it likely is a obscure but simple encryption everyone is over looking.

in the end, with fanfiction, I am not a expert, so its going to be hard to sound smart when I am flying uncontrolled trying to make a belivable plot.

Did anyone else notice that on the right side of Kryptos, it says "Kryptos" again and again?
Once you find it, you'll see that the word bends into a right angle, and continues.
I guess that's why it's called Kryptos though...
