If you want to have a background on Freemasonry before "the Solomon Key" comes out, try reading "The Hiram Key". You may learn somethings about the US founding fathers that you didn't know.
Most government buildings in Washington have a masonic corner stone, as well as George Washington, a known mason, allowed a painting of himself wearing his masonic apron (not normally done).

" Some DeMolay alumni include: Walt Disney, John Wayne; newsmen Dan Rather, Walter Cronkite, John Cameron Swayze, Willard Scott and Chet Huntley; entertainers Dick and Tommy Smothers, Buddy Ebsen, Burl Ives; and authors John Steinbeck and William Shirer." http://freemasonry.bcy.ca/textfiles/family.html
You can see Steinbeck's Knight Templar background being mentioned in Winter of Our Discontent's main character.

Jumping to crazy conclusions here, but this is fun to think about none the less. There is a bridge in DC named the Rosslyn-Key Bridge...Rosslyn Chapel (Not sure if they are spelled the same) and Key...spooky.

A little off the DB subject, but regarding literary and movie links to freemasonry, how about the old Sherlock Holmes movie where Holmes tracks down Jack The Ripper. The Ripper turns out to be a royal personage, protected by highly placed freemasons. The story suggested that freemasons pretty much ran the 1800 English government and covered up what would have been a huge scandal. Hence, the Ripper was never "caught."

"All the stuff on the thread about Victorian Freemasons and their place in the establishment of the time reminded me of the movie "Murder by Decree". In it, Holmes (played by Christopher Plummer) and Watson, investigate the Ripper murders. In one part of the film, Holmes deduces that the inscription found on a Whitechapel wall "the jewes are not the ones who will be blamed for nothing" doesn't mean that the jews of the East End are to blame for the murders, but rather that there is a conection with the Freemasons. This indeed turns out to be so when later on in the film he is taken to a Masonic temple and is confronted by Sir Charles Warren who warns him to leave the case alone.""

Movies like Murder By Decree and the recent From Hell (with Johnny Depp) show the Masonic wording related to the Jewes, not to be confused with Jews, who are the three murderers of Hiram Abif in Masonic ritual lore.
Other movies showing Knights Templars and Freemasons in a bad light are Ivanhoe, the recent Kingdom of Heaven. Stuff abounding from Godfather III (mentions the phoney P2 Masonic Lodge in Italy) also make Freemasonry look bad.

EVDebs,
That's right--it was "Murder By Decree," not the best Sherlock Holmes story around, but one that explored sinister rumors of Freemasonry and its alleged ties to politics. Not being a mason, I can't say one way or another whether these types of things go on.

It was actually "Juwes" that was written on the wall not "Jewes"

Steel, Dazzel, Bro Cory.
"Murder by Decree" was based on Stephan Knights "Jack the Ripper-solved!", the most ludicrus piece of garbage ever written.
Steel, you do NOT have to be a mason to use your head. Do you REALLY believe we could do something like that--especially to WOMEN?
Just a question.

Kt, no, I don't think anyone in his right mind would do such a thing. I think the story suggested that Prince Edward, a member of royalty was, in fact, Jack The Ripper, and that the Masons protected this information from the public, in order to preserve the dignity of the Crown. Or something like that. I am sure that the Freemasons are part of a very beneficial organization these days. Keep in mind that every major organization, everything from the Catholic Church to the Boy Scouts, has had its share of black eyes in history or--in the case of upcoming novels--fiction.

Steel Oh, we do! I am one of the few that believe that William Morgan really COULD have been killed by Masons! I have also seen my share of folks that I've said: "how in the world did THEY get in!" I have also been present at a Masonic trail and seen some booted out.
You have most of the story down....however, my first objection to the whole thing is that IF Saucy Jack were a mason, he would NOT do that to women! Secondly, why do it in such a way as to POINT to Masons--I, for one, would want to point AWAY from us. Thirdly, folks in such high positions would not be so dumb...they would have hired someone.
I wasn't disparaging you. Hope you didn't take it that way.
