It's a step up.
Seriously though, there's a world of writing out there and it saddens me to see that people talk about re-reading pulp fiction when there's very little to take away from it. Sometimes, I feel, when they have read very little - so little as to say that Brown is a great writer - I honestly can't take their opinions on board with respect to what is good and bad.
Sadly there's so many great writers* out there who people don't give the time of day because they are only interested in the latest from John Grisham, Stephen King, Anne Rice, James Patterson, etc.
* Italo Calvino, Alan Hollinghurst, Kazuo Ishiguro, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, JG Ballard, Haruki Murakami, Jeffrey Eugenides, Jorge Luis Borges, and then new writers (at least to us) such as Khaled Hosseini, Ismail Kadare and the exceptionally different House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski.

People do "get something out of fiction." While it is not a history book, they get something that economists would call "utility." People get their "utility" from different things. You might not like Dan Brown's books, but other do. Just the same way that you probably do not like the movies that I like; we have different tastes. That, to me, is what makes the world go round. Why does everyone have to be like YOU? Why do people, like yourself, feel the need to criticize everyone that is NOT LIKE YOU! Difference is ideal, as I would never want to be as close minded as yourself.

You're making stuff up as you go along. Nowhere did I say anything of that sort. I'm simply concerned for literature and confused at people saying they are "rereading" Brown's books. If they love reading so much then how's about they widen their tastes?

Wow. I only read one of those "great writers" which is kinda depressing. Could you possibly consider adding Alexander Dumas, Charles Dickens, James Joyce, Chaucer, Shakespeare, John Milton, Dostoevsky, Lao Tzu, Epictetus, Plato and a few dozen others?

Certainly, although I was referring to new releases from current living writers. Althoughg Borges did seem to slip into my contemporary list.

ahh
contemporary great writers are a bit harder, since most are not appreciated until after they have died.

One's a hack and one's a character - how could they possibly be compared?

Though I agree that comparing an AUTHOR and a character is impossible.

Robert Langdon enjoyed the look on others' faces when he told them that Harry Potter wasn't real.

At which point Harry Potter turned up and Avada Kedavra'd Langdon's sorry ass.
(which is totally out of character, but, oh well.

Nono, Dan Brown was an English Teacher, he could write an ultimate spell book that really makes the user self-destruct, and then replace it with Harry's spellbook.

That really disturbs me. I hope it was English literature rather than any form of creative writing.
