TRIO CRACKS CODE
Ron Howard, Brian Grazer and Akiva Goldsman to collaborate on Da Vinci Code for Sony.
Sony Pictures Entertainment is reuniting the Oscar-winning team behind A Beautiful Mind to crack The Da Vinci Code. Ron Howard will direct, Brian Grazer will produce and Akiva Goldsman will adapt the Dan Brown novel for the big screen, with Sony Pictures chairman-CEO John Calley likely to make the film his first producing gig once he relinquishes his studio duties this fall. Grazer and Howard's Imagine Entertainment will produce with Calley.
The story concerns various clues that are hidden in different Leonardo Da Vinci paintings. When put together, the clues will unlock secrets that get to the core and meaning of Christianity. Sony's Columbia Pictures picked up the rights to Code and other Brown books back in June. Since being published, the book has spent 26 weeks on the national bestseller list, much of that time at No. 1.
Howard, Grazer and Goldsman are currently collaborating on Cinderella Man, starring Russell Crowe. Da Vinci will likely be Howard's next project after Cinderella. The CAA-repped helmer most recently directed The Missing, which Sony will release in mid-November, and he will receive a producing credit on The Alamo, which Touchstone will release on Christmas Day.
Grazer currently has several films in production through Imagine. He's now working on Fun With Dick and Jane and The Incredible Shrinking Man, both for Sony Pictures.
Goldsman most recent penned I, Robot, which 20th Century Fox will release next summer.

That's not exactly how *I* would describe the book - even overly simplified.

DARN! I didn't see this post when I put up the other thread. Sorry.
I'm also sorry Ron Howard is getting his hands on this. Want to bet Russel Crowe and Julia Roberts are cast? Guarantee Hollywood plays up the "chase" scenes rather than the mystery.
I'm sooooo sad.

Ok, we all know that the movie will be nothing compared to the book, though I think this book is one that CAN be adapted, unlike many others that are impossible to even suggest as a movie. but, yes, the chase scenes and the fight scenes will probably get a lot more screen time than the scenes with Teabing explaining Christian history or anything like that...

I agree - the movie will be a sex/special effects movie bearing little resmblence to the story in the book...

I still want to see it, though. I think this book really *is* adaptible--there are many parts that would work well in context of a movie. It should be an ok film, though totally different from the book.

Ok, this is going to be a movie that's either great or just flops. Really needs a good director. Let's hope that it works out well.

Russel Crow's "Beautiful mind" had little to no action in it. Ron Howard is an excellent director. Russel Crow and Julia Roberts would make an excellent duo. Julia Roberts isn't exactly an action star.

Wish I could remember.
Come to think of it, Julia Roberts is a bit old for sophie.
Michael Kane would make a great Teabing if they could get him.

I'm not a big fan of it being made into a movie. Unless it will be long as all hell, all of the information cannot be included. Of course, since it's Hollywood, the writers could possibly care less about the historical aspect of it. Who wants to bet that while Sophie is French, she won't be in the movie? Or that she'll miraculously speak such perfect English she won't even have an accent?

hm....maybe. But then again, whoever it is that directs might get a foreign star just for the accent to go for the "hot foreign chic" aspect.

Hey, being a film student when I first heard this was being made into a movie I was scared due to the high quality of the book. I am happy to hear that Dan Brown as of this point IS a consultant on the movie, so this should help put some of our fears to rest.
I do not know who is actually writing the script, but it is very likery that Dan Brown could be involved. Especially with The Passion of Christ, we could see a whole new era in Hollywood where they want to go with more storytelling and plot over special effects ... for the love of God I hope this is the case.

I have no idea who in hollywood would make a good Langdon, but I thought Angelina Jolie might fit Sophie well. She looks somewhat French (I think her mother is French), I believe she speaks it. She has also done mystery films such as "The Bone Collecter", which really only had one action scene at the end and focused on the solving of clues and puzzles similar to "The Da Vinci Code", and also the recent hit "Taking Lives" which focused on her analytical thinking in solving a mystery.
Thats just my two cents worth.

True... My only problem is that she is too pretty. Sophie Neveu is not supposed to look like an international model. I mena, she's a cryptologist!

We'll muss her hair a little. Hey, if all the fat dorky guys on tv can be married to hot younger women, Angelina Jolie can play Sophie.

Speaking of casting, what do you all think of Rachel Weisz as Sophie?

Hi all, new person alert. I would suggest Renee Zelweger (Bridget Jones' Diary) as Sophie, and Colin Firth (Love Actually) as Robert. I only found this site recently, and therefore this is the first I have heard of a film being made. I can't wait to see it whoever the cast might be. I read the Davinci Code, Angels and Demons and am currently reading Deception Point, and I would be pleased to see all of them on the big screen.

Out of the actors on the plate for Robert, I would vote for Hugh Jackman, second George Clooney. I love Georgie but Hugh looks more like a pansy-professor from the north east after his role in Kate and Leopold. Of course, my personal favorite would be Rob Lowe .
I think that Rachel Weisz is a great choice for Sopie. She was great in The Mummy, and proved to be a great action heroine.

I think Rachel Weizz would be good for the role of Sophe, and Hugh Jackman for Robert. I was trying to think of who could play the role of Bezu Fache well, but haven't been able to come up with any ideas. Any suggestions as to who could be cast?

Russell Crowe is totally wrong for the part. For a start he does not have Langdon's swimmers body, and in my opinion would not do well in Harris tweed. Robert is portrayed as being intelligent, good looking and intriguing as well as having a voice that is described as 'chocolate for the ears'. Im not saying Crowe is a bad actor, but I doubt he could fill my expectations.

I'm totally against Russell Crowe playing Robert Langdon! That would just ruin everything - especially for us Langdon lovers!
I agree that Rachel Weisz should play Sophie and that the film would need a good director - a film would be very different to the book. If it turned out to be a total flop, then those who havn't discovered how great the book is would just think that the whole Da Vinci Code story is a load of rubbish - which it isn't!!

it should be made compulsory for people to read the book as well as see the film. then that way, if the film is badly done and turns out to be a flop, people will still see that dan brown is an excellent author!

I don't know why, but when reading the book, I imagined Bezu Fache to be black - sort of like Wesley Snipes in Blade.

Latest news says we've got Julie Delpy and Tom Hanks in the lead. Still don't know who's playing Bezu, but I see someone like a fat Peter Sellers. <shrug>

Couple Crack Code Ian McKellen and Alfred Molina have been added to the cast of Ron Howard's The Da Vinci Code. By Mark Umbach Ian McKellen and Alfred Molina have cracked the Code. McKellen and Molina have been added to the cast of Ron Howard's The Da Vinci Code, an adaptation of the Dan Brown bestseller. Howard's Imagine Entertainment partner Brian Grazer is producing the film with John Calley for Sony Pictures Entertainment. Production is slated for a June start with a targeted May 19, 2006, release.
Tom Hanks, Audrey Tautou and Jean Reno have already been cast in the project, which is being adapted for the big screen by Akiva Goldsman.
The film will star Hanks as Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon, who, along with cryptographer Sophie Neveu (Tautou), is working to uncover Holy Grail. Molina joins the cast as Bishop Arigarosa, who becomes quite interested in the activities of Langdon and Neveu, and McKellen will play Sir Teabing, a wealthy backer of Langdon's quest who develops his own interests in finding the Grail.
McKellen, a two-time Oscar nominee, will soon be seen with Natasha Richardson in the drama Asylum for Paramount Classics. He's also negotiating to reprise his role as Magneto in X-Men 3. Lately, he's best known for playing Gandalf the Wizard in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Molina, who was recently seen as Doc Ock in Spider-Man 2, will soon be filming Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of Shakespeare's As You Like It for HBO. His other recent credits include Coffee and Cigarettes, Identity and Frida, among others.
