The Ultimate Code
      #209 - 11/29/03 07:53 AM

Kenny has mentioned this code, so here's a link to some tips and hints: http://www.danbrown.com/secrets/digital_fortress/ultimate_code.html . I haven't attempted it yet, but did notice it inside the book jacket.

Be forewarned that there's no great prize awaiting you at the end of this code puzzle, only the prize of self-satisfaction. If it helps, you can treat yourself to a candy bar or ice cream as a reward if you break it. I'll take a stab at it and see how it goes.

Cool, cool! I can't wait to see what you come up with, I'm also trying to crack this infamous code. I've included my math teacher as well.

Gah! I think I know how to find the code, but I don't have the book on me. It's at my friend's, and I'm home for the holidays. Anybody willing to help me on this? I think I know how to figure it out...email me if you want to help (and know the code) and I can ask you specifically.
Thanks in advance!

Here are some helpful hints on cracking the code:
*Count the number of numbers...how is that number special?
*Look at your book (pay close attention to the chapters)

Happy Hunting!!

Hello, Guardo. I've been trying to solve this forever. Guess me & my friends are dummies. Dan Brown's site didn't help a lot.

I'll appreciate any valuable info you may have to impart in soving the Ultimate Code.

His books are great!

Thanx,

Bobby G

I just finished it and saw the code and immeditly knew what to do. Espically after counting the number of numbers in the code. Come on Mr. Brown, give us something a bit more challenging!

If Sharma was working for the agency, I'd fire her butt. The first thing I did was to look at the highest number, then looked at the ascii key code, 0-127 added 1 and I thought I was on my way. Then It occured to me, many many readers but might not know ascii codes so the book has to contain the key to the code.

Now that the secret has jumped the vault: What's in each chapter: words, letters? Where would you think the easiest place would be to start?

What's special about: 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49...

I get that each number refers to a chapter, I know that thefinal result is C-O-N-G-R-A-T-U-L-A-T-I-O-N-S-!
I know there are 16 numbers in the code

how can I use this info to find that answer?

Two people in distant locations have exact copies of the same book. They want to pass messages back and forth undetected. They work out a system of referencing words or letters in the book to create a message. Dan Brown has used an extremely simple form of this code in Digital Fortress. Pay close attention to detail.

You will not be able to read the message even after you collect your data. There is a lot of mathematics in cryptology. You are going to have to use simple mathematics to set up your data and extract the message.

Remember that the book is about the most advanced (we hope) crypto organization in the world. Also remember that Dan Brown wrote this book because one of his students was approached by the Secret Service because of something that the student had sent to a friend in an email message.

If you need more help, email me at wjtjd@bellsouth.net

I have been following Dan Brown's work since he started writing books. My copy of Digital Fortress is fourth printing. Until Da Vinci Code came out I occasionally corresponded with Dan Brown by email.

My post was designed to educate the interested parties concerning cryptology. I did not give away the secrets of the code. I broke the code years ago and confirmed it with Dan Brown by email.

I figured out the code after reading all these hints. If you are still having trouble here is another hint: 6 is A vowel.

Is having the book mandatory to solving this code? I 'listened' to the book.. ie, an audiobook.

I've now read all four of Dan Brown's books and have totally enjoyed each one!!!

Just wanted to note ... and I'm sure you're all aware of this. But Deception Point also has a code at the end of the book - same format (when comparing the two codes you're given a big clue on how to work it out). I'm sure the other two books have something at end as well but my copies are currently circulating amongst friends who won't give them back!!!

I would say it would be very difficult on an audio book unless you can tune to specific areas of the book.

If the rotating clear text function uses a "time-variant" as Dan Brown mentioned, isn't it possible to prevent the cleartext from shifting by disabling the computer clock? Just a thought...
