Not my favourite, but...
      #37 - 10/21/03 06:54 PM

Of Dan Brown's four novels to date, this one was my least favourite. However, I did like the main character, Rachel Sexton, because she didn't ever become weak or simpering in the face of danger. Dan Brown writes decent female characters -- smart, brave, self-confident.

I love the insider info on NASA. Loved all the details about exploring in the Arctic and geology. I found the Washington political stuff, and Senator Sedgewick Sexton rather dull and cliched, but I'm sure others with more interest in politics might feel differently.

My main complaint about the book? Hated the opening sequence where Delta Force tosses the geologist and his dogs out of the helicopter. I really hate violence involving animals. Oddly enough, if they'd just tossed the scientist and spared the dogs, I would have felt better about the whole incident.

I am reading this one right now, so far so good but I agree with you about the dog flying out of the helicopter bit. I wonder if Dan Brown has a fear of helicopters! It seems to be a recurring theme.

Also, I want to know how they kept that hot hunk of rock from melting the ice when they put it down. I could see it sinking right back in. Oh well, I believe in miracles anyway.

So what do you think? I am finding this one very easy to put down, just not as intriguing in anyway as The DaVinci Code or Angels and Demons. Maybe he hadn't hit his stride when he wrote this one.

Just finished it! Not a terribly bad read, but not the greatest, either. A lot of it was pretty far-fetched...

I dunno - I have a keen interest in politics and I thought it sounded pretty cliche, too... It would probably make a great Indiana Jones movie, there was so much that was just truly unbelievable going on. First off, I cannot see a highly classified submarine surfacing within minutes just because they heard an "SOS" being pounde dout on ice...

I really hated the opening sequence, too - especially since I have to take Cybil in tomorrow morning to be spayed. I'm VERY doggie sensitive right now.....

I would have to say that I absolutely loved this book. I found it really hard to put down, unlike you guys did (not that there's anything wrong with that! ^_^)

I thought that the NASA information and all was interesting considering what's going on these days with the Mars rovers and whatnot, and the SPECOPs bits were fantastic. I really like that military stuff, so I'd have to say I'm biased.
Oddly, I was hoping that the Delta boys would be foiled or killed when i thought the controller was Tench (which i was conviced of for a long time), but then I was floored when i found out that it was, well, you know. I thought that fit more though, since it makes sense that a politician shouldn't control these deadly special ops. sucks that they all went, but at least it wasn't too corny, like those forsaken "Navy Seal" movies.
I found some of the things that Sedgewick did quite disturbing, especially if real politics are like that.
Anyway, great read!

I read Deception Point after Angels&Demons and DaVinci Code. I found it wasn't as gripping off the bat like the others (I felt the same about Digital Fortress, which I just finished), but it did pick up. After having read all four of these books, I am a bit miffed that he appears to be following the same basic pattern for each one. They're still a great read, mind - but I don't know that I'll read any more of his books. *ducks the flying objects*

Has anyone broken the code at the end of Digital Fortress?
1-V-116-44-46-L-51-130-19-118-L-32-118-116-130-28-116-32-44-133-U-130

I thought "Caeser's Box", but there are too few characters.

poia: ummm...huh?
I'll agree that the books follow a similar plot structure, with the dream, culminating with surprise phone-call at the beginning, unravelling of clues to get to a hidden achievement and a big plot twist at the end. Unfortunatelly, after a few, one begins to anticipate what's coming, though the books are still really good, IMHO.

Gosh - I'm sorry - I gave the wrong title!!! Yes, I solved the Digital Fortress code. The code I wrote was this:
1-V-116-44-46-L-51-130-19-118-L-32-118-116-130-28-116-32-44-133-U-130

It's found at the end of DECEPTION POINT, not Digital Fortress. Please forgive my mistake. Has anyone any tips to crack this one?

Thanks in advance,
Janice (a 'she', actually. )

ok... dunnit
I'm sorry to tell you the code you wrote is only 22 "letters" instead of 25:
1-V-116-44-11-89-44-46-L-51-130-19-118-L-32-118-116-130-28-116-32-44-133-U-130
now, I think you know he likes "chapters"

I tried that and got garbage. I'll do it again, maybe I missed something. You inserted the letters from the code where they are, right? (Why didn't he 'hide' those, too?)

Oh for goodness sake! I'm such an idiot. I copied the code down wrong the first time. I knew I had written 22 characters, but I did so because I wasn't careful enough.
Got it now. Thanks so much, poia.

This is the first Dan Brown novel I have read. Grabbed it because it looked interesting and I had heard of The DaVinci Code.
I found this book very difficult to put down in the beginning. I thought it was excellent. However, about halfway (maybe two thirds) through, I developed a hunch as to who the villian was, and it turned out to be correct. The story started to fall apart halfway through and became more and more predictable.
I also thought alot of the technology and scenarios seemed pretty far-fetched, very James Bond-like. There is a disclaimer in the beginning stating that all the technology and weaponry describedin the book is real, but I have my doubts.
As a whole, I thought the book was a good read. Good enough to read another Dan Brown book. I wanted to read The DaVinci Code, but it is not available in paperback yet. I also thought about reading Angels & Demons because it is supposed to be a predecessor to the Davinci Code, but I ended up grabbing Digital Fortress. (They had it at the supermarket, so I figured why not) I'm about halfway through it now, and I am enjoying it, although I don't find it as suspenseful as Deception Point.

Bulldog - The stuff in these books does seem rather far-fetched, however I don't believe the publisher would allow Brown to say at the beginning that "All these facts are true" if they were not. Part of the reason Brown is doing so well is that his research is very thorough and he is bringing to light many facts that were previously thought ultra-secret or impossible.
I suggest reading other books rather than Dan Brown's in between, take some time to forget what happens, because if you thought your first was predictable, you're bound to be disappointed with some of the others.
My favorite, hands down, is Angels & Demons (My first DB book). I found it by far the most gripping. DaVinci Code comes a very close second - both gripping and thought inspiring.

I am finding this book very "putty downy", (page 285 at the mo), but because DVcode and Angls n Dmns were so good, I will trundle on. I really am bored by all the political stuff, but I read on hoping that there will be a very BIG twist to keep me going. I don't know if it's just me, but has anyone found that this book has a little too much descriptive text? I prefer to use my imagination when reading a book, and am a bit allergic to too many adjectives, and I am finding this book a bit hard going on the "give us a clue/ twist/ brain-teaser" front.

I don't know what page I am on, but I find I am not as eager to pick it back up. I want to finish it, but not with the vigor I had for A&D, DVC.

I've just finished reading Digital Fortress - which is the last one for me out of the four books and I would have to agree that I would order my favourites as DVC, A&D, DF and then Deception Point. Through out each book I've had vivid visual ideas of how it could work as a movie and felt that DP was a bit too cliche. I love the historical value and information on the 'clash of the titans' - religion and science - in DVC and A&D! I found that the code breaking was more interactive in the other three books as well. With Angels and Demons ... I had been to Rome recently and was almost shouting out loud where the water sculpture and the liar must be from early on - yet I was hooked to the end.

As for the code at the end of Deception Point ... I don't want to spoil anything but .... you've put it in wrong. The code is:

1-V-116-44-11-89-44-46-L-51-130-19-118-L-32-118-116-130-28-116-32-44-133-U-130

So you were on the right track. Just count again! If you compare the two codes from Deception Point and Digital Fortress you'll be given the clue on what the numbers represent.

Will definitely be reading more of Dan Brown considering Angels & Demons and The Da Vinci Code were his latest master pieces! Hope they keep on getting better!

BTW - I'm new to this website and I'm loving it!

Cheers

I just finished it a few hours ago. It was pretty good IMHO.

Although as soon as they said that the Bioluminescient Plankton came from the sea, and Norah said there were no cracks, I knew how it had gotten there. I dunno if the book was predictable, or I'm smart, or it was dumb luck, but I was right. :-D

Overall, I liked it. But all of his books seem to have the same basic structure, with just different types of conflicts. and they always end with the two main characters hooking up. lol

I agree that Deception Point is my least favourite - not that its bad or anything, its just not as good as the Robert Langdon novels. I'm not really into politics and all that, and I thought the book was quite comparable to other fiction books to do with politics (like those by Sidney Sheldon). I did like the character Corky though - he gave the book some funny moments!

for all of the numbers mentioned you go to that chapter and substitue the number with the first letter of that chapter. THEN you do a caesar box. its the same with the back of digital fortress.

I'm just in the early part of this book. Ming has just fallen into the pit, to be exact, so I don't know what's still to come. However, I think it's pretty good so far.

Does anyone know if there is a movie in the works for this one? The perfect actor to play Michael Tolland is Michael Paré. His physical description and demeanor fit as if the part were written for him. Anyone know how I can make that suggestion to whomever might own the rights?

Well, I've finished it. Without wanting to spoil anything for anyone else, I'll just say that I was a little disappointed about whom the controller turned out to be. The motives behind these people's actions are a little confusing.

However, I liked the main characters.
