Of Dan Brown's four novels to date, this one was my least favourite. However, I did like the main character, Rachel Sexton, because she didn't ever become weak or simpering in the face of danger. Dan Brown writes decent female characters -- smart, brave, self-confident.
I love the insider info on NASA. Loved all the details about exploring in the Arctic and geology. I found the Washington political stuff, and Senator Sedgewick Sexton rather dull and cliched, but I'm sure others with more interest in politics might feel differently.
My main complaint about the book? Hated the opening sequence where Delta Force tosses the geologist and his dogs out of the helicopter. I really hate violence involving animals. Oddly enough, if they'd just tossed the scientist and spared the dogs, I would have felt better about the whole incident.

I am reading this one right now, so far so good but I agree with you about the dog flying out of the helicopter bit. I wonder if Dan Brown has a fear of helicopters! It seems to be a recurring theme.
Also, I want to know how they kept that hot hunk of rock from melting the ice when they put it down. I could see it sinking right back in. Oh well, I believe in miracles anyway.

So what do you think? I am finding this one very easy to put down, just not as intriguing in anyway as The DaVinci Code or Angels and Demons. Maybe he hadn't hit his stride when he wrote this one.

It's getting better - I'm om page 189 and you're right. it's much easier to put down than the others...

Just finished it! Not a terribly bad read, but not the greatest, either. A lot of it was pretty far-fetched...

I dunno - I have a keen interest in politics and I thought it sounded pretty cliche, too... It would probably make a great Indiana Jones movie, there was so much that was just truly unbelievable going on. First off, I cannot see a highly classified submarine surfacing within minutes just because they heard an "SOS" being pounde dout on ice...
I really hated the opening sequence, too - especially since I have to take Cybil in tomorrow morning to be spayed. I'm VERY doggie sensitive right now.....

I would have to say that I absolutely loved this book. I found it really hard to put down, unlike you guys did (not that there's anything wrong with that! ^_^)
I thought that the NASA information and all was interesting considering what's going on these days with the Mars rovers and whatnot, and the SPECOPs bits were fantastic. I really like that military stuff, so I'd have to say I'm biased.
Oddly, I was hoping that the Delta boys would be foiled or killed when i thought the controller was Tench (which i was conviced of for a long time), but then I was floored when i found out that it was, well, you know. I thought that fit more though, since it makes sense that a politician shouldn't control these deadly special ops. sucks that they all went, but at least it wasn't too corny, like those forsaken "Navy Seal" movies.
I found some of the things that Sedgewick did quite disturbing, especially if real politics are like that.
Anyway, great read!

I read Deception Point after Angels&Demons and DaVinci Code. I found it wasn't as gripping off the bat like the others (I felt the same about Digital Fortress, which I just finished), but it did pick up. After having read all four of these books, I am a bit miffed that he appears to be following the same basic pattern for each one. They're still a great read, mind - but I don't know that I'll read any more of his books. *ducks the flying objects*
Has anyone broken the code at the end of Digital Fortress?
