Deception Point

We just chose this book to be an upper school-wide summer read because so many students enjoyed Da Vinci Code. Do you all think this novel may be entertaining to this age group?
We are also hoping it will generate good discussion regarding Brown's world of political intrigue and our reality today...especially regarding space policy, propagation of misinformation to drum up political support, lobbyists' driving interests and corrupt politicians.
All lot of us realize Deception Point is not as good as Da Vinci Code, but we hope it will be a fun summer read.

I enjoyed DP a lot. If the potential audience for this book liked DVC I think they'll like DP. Since it is an election year, while the plot is a stretch, it does give an opportunity to think about how far some people might go to ensure someone gets elected. There are many points of view in this book to talk about that one topic by itself.

I enjoyed the book because it kept me thinking, putting myself in the shoes of the characters, made it a page turner for me. Predictable? Maybe. But certainly fun.

Yes I agree with Packer_Fan. Deception Point was the first book that I read by Dan Brown. It's an excellent read. I would recommend the book, it's very intense, and keeps you locked in. I read the book in 2 days. I could not put it down.

It will be a fun read, I just finished it last week and it was very gripping. Many things in the novel are a little far fetched, but it is a story after all.

I'm reading it now and I'm enjoying it. One question I have for anyone who reads this. I don't know where else to ask this because I'm new and can't make a new topic. On page 310 (paperback version), the last sentence in the second to last paragraph (starts "Holding his bottle of Courvoisier..."), my copy of the book is missing a word. It reads "The lights [blank] to twinkle gleefully in the wind." It isn't a crucial sentence or anything. I'm guessing the word is 'seemed' or something of the like. I assume it's just my copy also. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what that word is. Thank you.

I've been questioning reading this book. I've found a similar ending for TDVC and A&D. Should I even read this book?

You're right. It is "seemed". I have other questions:

Does Rachel fall through a pond or a river as an ice-skater? In the beginning it's a "pond", but near the end when she's recalling her mother's rescue, it's a "river." Are these terms interchangeable? Perhaps it's a pond connected to the river?

Also, the author refers to the Oval Office as Clinton Bedroom and "Dick's Den". Does "Dick" here refer to Richard Nixon and "Den" refer to his scheming?

I have a quick question.. the page opposite the epilogue has a long set of numbers with a few letters:
1-V-116-44-11-89-44-46-L-51-130-19-118-L-32-118-116-32-44-133-U-130
Now maybe it's because I've read The Davinci Code, Angels and Demons and did the online hunt, but could that be some type of code to break or is it something mundane like it being a edition or copyright thing?

I just got finished reading Deception Point no less then 5 minutes ago. I thought it was phenomenol. Yet another time that I'm blown away by a Dan Brown book (I hope Digital Fortress will make me feel the same way after I read it next). It had a everything...Rachel and Micheal were both a great hero team. Corky as a kind of side kick "sidekick" and comic relief. And Norah had some great one-liners too. Plus villains were great. I was surprised with Pickering being the mastermind behind it all. And there were times in the book were I would've liked to dropkick Senator Sexton in the face. I thought it was an awesome book up there (for me at least on par with A&D and DVC). Awesome book. Keep 'em coming, Mr. Brown!
