Just wanted to post this and see if anyone had any new information on the movie. I know they have a director and a writer and that Russel Crow is supposed to be Robert. Just wondering if you'll could just keep me, and all of us, updated.

When is the filming of this movie supposed to begin? Does it have any sort of website yet? I hope they don't destroy the book...

Pretend you are a Hollywood casting director. How would you cast the movie?

BTW, according to IMDB, the movie director is Ron Howard and the screenplay was/will be written by Akiva Goldsman, both of A Beautiful Mind fame. It'd be intriguing if Russell Crowe was cast as Robert, although he is not listed on IMDB. No one seems to have been cast yet. Anyway, here is the link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0382625/

Trying to answer my own question... what do y'all think of Rachel Weisz for Sophie?

I don't really think that Crowe would make the best Langdon. I don't know who I would cast, if I had a choice. I do think that Rachel Weisz would be a good choice for Sophie. The only thing that I can see being a bigger challenge than keeping with the integrity of Brown's writing is finding a big albino actor to play Silas. Makeup just wouldn't do it for that. Whoever is writing the screenplay should make sure to consult with Brown, too many movies have been ruined by the transition from book to film. Example: The original Jurrasic Park screenplay was written with Michael Crichton consulting and was as true to the novel as any adaptation I have seen. After the first movie, however, Crichton was being phased out and the movies just went downhill.

Movies.com also has a listing which rumors that Kate Beckinsale is going to play Sophie (a poor choice in my opinion).
Who would I choose?
Robert=Rob Schneider ("You can do it!")
JUST KIDDING.
Actually Crowe might be okay. But Beckinsale? She doesn't seem the type to me. How about Catherine Bell. (hubba hubba)
I picture a Robert Langdon in my head but I can't think of an actor that looks the way I imagine him. To me he is about 40ish, with wavy brown hair that is short, but not too short (much longer than a military cut). He has an intelligent looking face and a thin body. He is strong but not "built." He might wear sandles with Khaki's and a loose button up shirt in the summer. A blazer in the winter, or a turtleneck sweater with the sleeves slightly rolled up and tucked in to a pair of corderoys.
We'll see.

I just read on-line an article from the Concord Monitor. Brown spoke in Concord, New Hampshire and reveled that he doesn't know who will star in the film - Ralph Fiennes, Hugh Jackman, George Clooney, Tom Hanks and Russell Crowe have all been suggested - although he has right of refusal in casting.

I think Ralph Fiennes or Hugh Jackman would be perfect casting. The others, while I like them, would have too much obvious star powerishness.

amusingly enough, the person who, to me, looks most like Lngdon is Dan Brown himself. The clothing styles match, and many of the physical characteristics, too.

I doubt it, but neither can some of the world's "best" actors. THey just go out there and look pretty/hot for the camera.

I have been reveling in who to cast for the movie. My two cents would be Richard Dean Anderson of McGiver fame as Robert Langdon. I also would like to see David Suchet of Agaatha Christies Poirot series in the role of Fache. For the role of Silas I think Vin Diesal would make a menacing albino.
I am really stuck on who best to play Sophia. From the red hair standpoint, Juia Roberts would work, but I do not find her to be perceived as the "intelligent one" that Sophia is. I have also thought of Catherine Zeta Jones, or Uma Thurman....

Fair enough Silas was a boring/bad character and a nondescript actor would be best suited for the role.
However, if the film wants to be good then wouldn't you be better off casting someone who can act?

I guess russel crow would do, but he isn't like I imagined, as someone else suggested. The guy that played ross on friends would be a visual similarity, maybe not so slim, but he's too goofy. Sophia? The woman, and I can't think of her name, but she played the Last Scion in Dogma, Liberty stands still, and Men in Black I.
I went to buy the other Dan Brown books and with his was an old book called The Davinci Legacy. Now, this book perportedly was published in 1983, and then again in 2004. It is quite anachronistic for 1983, having mentioned the bombings of 9/11. And it is hard to follow, basically the plot resembles the better work but with more radical action. (Lots of murders being done by the protagonist in the name of self preservation.) But it's not as believable.
Now as far as the time reference: is it normal when republishing or re-releasing a book to update its content? Or is this book just a very poor and pale late entry, riding on the coattails of TDC success? The author is Lewis Perdue.

I agree, we don't need a megastar, someone who plays down roles really well. This is a humble man.
But they do call it acting for a reason. Hugh Jackman is a good idea.

I hope no one scowls at me for these suggestions...but I'd like to see:
(a younger) Harrison Ford as Robert...and Monica Bellucci as Sophia. (how fittingly she played Mary M. in Passion of the Christ)
Just my 2 cents...

Well, if you have Ron "I have an Oscar" Howard at the helm of the project, I'm sure you can shoot for big name talent for the casting. I think the suggestion of Ralph Finnes as Robert is brilliant! He has that thoughtfulness and Intelligent sensitivity I associated with Robert but he can also be a strong and resourceful man.
As for Sophie, I have suggested Rachel Weisz before, but since Sophie is French, why not tap into the pool of very talented French actresses? Sophie Marceau anyone? She is a brilliant actress!

Throughout my reading, I was picturing Robert Redford...maybe this role would've suited him best 10-15 years ago, but I'm sticking with him. As for the actors rumored, I think Ralph Finnes would be the most logical choice.
David Suchet would be a brilliant choice for Fache!
I read this book long ago...the other characters are not fresh enough in my mind to make any other suggestions.

Found this on the IMDB message board for 'The Da Vinci Code'. Seems a few posters got into heated debates over whom to cast so one decided to lighten things up a bit... http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0382625/board/flat/8544082
Posted by tekkentj: HI-larious ideas for cast, but we all forget one thing. This is being directed by Ron Howard, formerly Opie on the Andy Griffith show, so....
LANGDON -- Andy Taylor SOPHIE -- Helen Crump SILAS -- Ernest T. Bass FACHE -- Barney Fife COLLETE --Gomer and/or Goober Pyle TEABING -- Howard Sprague ARINGAROSA -- Ottis the drunk SAUNIERRE-- Floyd the Barber OLD WOMAN AT ROSSYLN CHURCH-- Aunt Bea YOUNG MAN AT ROSSYLN CHURCH-- Opie of course PRIORY OF SION (scene in Saunierre's summer place)-- The Darlings
Yeah, I fully realize that these people are characters, and some of the actors that played them are dead, but imagine the possibilities.
Langdon/Andy: This here DIE-vinci code is tougher than a nest of hornets. -or- Silas/Ernest T.: You can shout and you can cry,you haven't heard the last of the Opus Dei. -or- Fache/Fife: I think I solved Saunierre's murder. (eyes suddenly bulging) ANDY! YOU! -or- Saunierre/Floyd: Ooo, I've been shot. Yes, Ooo. Yes. Shot. (as only Floyd could say it) -or- Collete/Goober-- (to Langdon) Bezu says, "Hey." -AND- the scene in Saunierre's summer cottage would have the Darlings singing some old bluegrass song as Charlene Darlin straddles Floyd on the table. Saunierre/Floyd: Oooo. Yes. Divine Feminine. Yes. Ooo.
Two last things. Opus Dei. Opie Taylor. Opus....Opie. Hmmmmmm? Beze Fache. Barney Fife. BF Makes you think doesn't it?

I loved the casting of the Andy Griffith Show/Da Vinci Code. Hmm, someone needs to do Happy Days. Fonzie as Langdon. Pinky Tuscadero as Sophie. And so on.

I keep picturing Robert played by Ralph Fiennes. He has the age capability, the depth, and the physical characteristics. Who couldn't see him in tweed?

I personally pictured the bishop as Miguel Ferrar (sp). And for Fache, Jean Reno of Mission Impossible/Godzilla/The Professional fame. Just my thoughts.

I got an idea when I was watching Big Fish the other day. How about Billy Crudup for Langdon? He may be a tad young for the part but I think he could pull it off. Make-up artists can put a touch of grey in the hair and blue contacts for the eyes. That and I don't think he's that big of star to overshadow the part with his previous roles.

I also like Sophie Marceau for Sophie, and not just because of the name.
