Yeah, Sony Pictures and Columbia has announced they will make Angels and Demons. Akiva Goldsman, the scriptwriter of the DVC will write the script for A&D. No information concerning Tom Hanks or Ron Howard, but i found this today :
"The folks at Sony Pictures are undoubtedly still swooning with relief that The Da Vinci Code overcame bad reviews and is roaring to worldwide grosses beyond $700 million. This happy state of affairs has already led to speculation in Hollywood about the next installment, Angels & Demons, based upon an earlier Dan Brown book. With these numbers, another film would seem to be a foregone conclusion. The question is whether key members of The Da Vinci Code team will return for Round Two.
"We are definitely planning to make this movie with Ron Howard and Tom Hanks," says Sony Pictures chief Amy Pascal. Sony has hired The Da Vinci Code screenwriter Akiva Goldsman to write Angels & Demons, but there's no deal with director Ron Howard or Tom Hanks. And many question whether either will return. One player involved with the production already got an e-mail about a rumor (a fanciful one) that Steven Spielberg will direct the next film (such an interesting idea for the founder of the Shoah Foundation).
Going through the opening of The Da Vinci Code had to be one of the most complete agony-and-ecstasy experiences for any filmmaker—and that's leaving aside the stress of dealing with the religious objectors. First the picture was savaged by reviewers, and then it opened huge. It's nice to make money, but even the rich and successful don't like to be heaped with public scorn. So, there's a strong incentive for the principals to declare victory and move on.
Despite Pascal's unequivocal insistence that Hanks and Howard will return, some informed speculation holds that Sony could live without either of them for the next installment. The talent on The Da Vinci Code is expensive, and some at the studio—looking at the film's extraordinary success overseas—give a measure of credit to a strong international cast, including Jean Reno, Ian McKellen, and Audrey Tautou. Since Angels & Demons is set before the events of The Da Vinci Code, a younger (and cheaper) male lead might work out fine.
Meanwhile, Hanks has movies lined up, including Charlie Wilson's War, about the congressman who supported Afghan rebels fighting the Soviets, and The Great Buck Howard, for which he is both actor and producer. Ron Howard is taking the summer off and then will direct another film. Even Goldsman is otherwise engaged at the moment: He's going to work on I Am Legend with Will Smith and won't even start on a Da Vinci Code sequel until fall—if then. So, if Sony wants to line up Angels & Demons, it might have a long wait. But with another Spider-Man ready to go for next summer, maybe the studio can afford to be patient."

I am afraid. If it's the same director in Da Vinci Code and in Angels&Demons, the movie will be bad. It's a good book, and I prefer they didn't the movie.

Hmm.. Well, how would the church feel about this one, I wonder? Crazy Carlemengos and a poisioned pope. I wonder what the scientists would thing - a container of anti-matter buried in the Vatican. I love the contraversy.
I think Angels and Demons is the better of the two books. But its not as widely read. Maybe it would struggle to get the same kind of audiences and make the big bucks.

I'm actually torn between wanting them to make the movie and not wanting them to make the movie. it's going to be kinda of hard to translate from book to movie because there are some parts in the book that the Vatican will not let them film (archives, Peters grave, etc.)

And if they do that in studio, it will be very bad.

Angels and Demons will do slightly worse than The Da Vinci Code only because it is not directly saying that Catholicism or Christianity is false. I look forward to the movie because the book was fantastic.

I think if they do the film in studio, it won't be that bad. Thanks to special effects and digital technology, it would be good. Remember, in the Da Vinci Code (the film), St Sulpice Church is made only with digital effets and studios. And it looks very good. Personnally, when i first saw the film, i didn't know it was special effects, and i didn't think it was special effects.

I hope they do a good job of it, I really do ! I hope they catch the Carlemengos brilliant charecter(I loved him!) I felt lukewarm about Langon in the DVC film because they can't seem to get his charecter across,
hmm, time will tell

I thought It was actually St Sulpice, too! If the directors got it right, it would be EXCELLENT, but I can't see the vatican willingly letting the team in to film.
Either way, I'd look forward to it.

Think about it, would we (as a Christian) want a camera crew running through one of our most religious buildings in the whole world! NO!!!! I loved the book but i think this movie should of been made 1st and the Vatican is not going to trust us now??

I believe that in most cases a book is better than anyone can put into picture. The use of your imagination with the book is often ruined when it is put to film. I would prefer that a movie of Angels and Demons not be made into a movie

I think they should get a new script writer at the very least, if not a new director too. Davinci Code was a little stiff, the first half hour was so bad I coudldn't believe it, thankfully it did pick up.

Wow, this news really made my day! I haven't seen The Da Vinci Code yet but I'm eagerly awaiting the DVD release in November. I was bummed when I completed all the Dan Brown books but these movies keep me in joyful anticipation!

I think A&D would make a better movie than the DVC. It's one movie I'd really look forward to seeing.

I've read this book 3 times now and I'm still uncertain about wheater I want a movie or not. Of course, a movie would be great. But I hava a picture about how all chracters look like and there are no actors that look like that.

Well, you can always let them make the movie, but you can decide whether or not you want to see it.

Sounds like the movie version is a goer, with Akiva Goldsman again doing the screenwriting, and Tom Hanks reportedly signing up to play Robert Langdon again (for the highest salary ever, no less - I guess if you're going to jump out of a plane...).

Kind regards, Greg

Naomi Watts has been cast as Vittoria
"Naomi Watts has landed a major role opposite Tom Hanks in Angels and Demons, according to The New York Post.
The prequel to the The Da Vinci Code, which will also be directed by Ron Howard, has had its production start pushed back due to the writers' strike.
"It's been put off at least until February," said one insider to the newspaper.
Angels and Demons arrives in theatres in 2009."

Isn't Angel and Demons basically the same as DVC? It has the same hero, a similar heroine, a similar plot, a similar theme, and is told using the same narrative technique. I actually think A&D is the better novel. I wonder if the movie will be any better?
