Thanks, this (wikipedia)gives a good oversight and leads into the theory that the Swiss guards were provided by agreement with a core group of royals to ensure that the papacy is protected as part of a wider (secret) agreement made to preserve royal money for the future by placing in trust with the Vatican.....

You learn something new every day.
The official dress uniform—a jumpsuit of blue, red, orange and yellow with a distinctly Renaissance appearance—dates to 1914. (A common misconception is that the dress uniform was designed by Michelangelo, but there is little evidence to support this claim.) From wikipedia

The uniform truly is a bit scary. I would so crack up if I was there. (I wish I was there!)

One of the requirements is that they be unmarried? No wonder, who would want to be married to a guy who wears a jester's costume.

Yeah, I mean where's the fun of being able to "dress your husband funny" if it's part of his job description?

I thought the London Beefeaters looked funny until I saw the Swiss Guards! I really was not aware of the Swiss Guards until the coverage of John Paul II's funeral. With all that coverage I learned a lot. And now I'm hooked on the Vatican's history, facts, art , papacy , etc. Its soo fascinating. I loved Angels and Demons because of where it took place. I want to travel to Rome someday and see it all up close.
