Thanks, this (wikipedia)gives a good oversight and leads into the theory that the Swiss guards were provided by agreement with a core group of royals to ensure that the papacy is protected as part of a wider (secret) agreement made to preserve royal money for the future by placing in trust with the Vatican.....

You learn something new every day.
The official dress uniform—a jumpsuit of blue, red, orange and yellow with a distinctly Renaissance appearance—dates to 1914. (A common misconception is that the dress uniform was designed by Michelangelo, but there is little evidence to support this claim.) From wikipedia

The uniform truly is a bit scary. I would so crack up if I was there. (I wish I was there!)

One of the requirements is that they be unmarried? No wonder, who would want to be married to a guy who wears a jester's costume.

Yeah, I mean where's the fun of being able to "dress your husband funny" if it's part of his job description?

I thought the London Beefeaters looked funny until I saw the Swiss Guards! I really was not aware of the Swiss Guards until the coverage of John Paul II's funeral. With all that coverage I learned a lot. And now I'm hooked on the Vatican's history, facts, art , papacy , etc. Its soo fascinating. I loved Angels and Demons because of where it took place. I want to travel to Rome someday and see it all up close.

I guess for the guards, there's also the honor that comes with the uniform. For that, they'll overlook the cheap guadiness of it.

::Sigh:: next time, please just post real replies. It can't be that hard to find something substantive to say.

You're right: it isn't. I had something substantive to say, and I said it - in the new thread.

Looks like we'll have to change permissions to 100 real posts before people are allowed to start new threads. Because, seriously, if a new thread is that important, you can write to an Admin or a Moderator to ask that a new thread be started. Also, your post, it didn't need a new thread. It was about the Swiss Guards, which is the topic that is right here.

The interesting question, which people don't seem to have worked out the answer to yet is: why are they Swiss?

The answer is in the Wikipedia entry referenced earlier in this thread. Basically, in 1505 Pope Julius II hired Swiss mercenaries to serve as his personal guard, due to their reputation for loyalty and skill. Essentially, he wanted "the best of the best," and in that day and age that was the Swiss army.

That's true enough. Alternatively - but I fear you will say that this suggestion is far too simplistic - you could just forget about this rule of the 5 posts before a thread. To me this rule sounds a bit like: 'You're new, therefore you are not READY/not GOOD ENOUGH to post a thread'. Rather patronizing, if you allow me to say so. I was just making a point, in a funny way (I thought) Would you have prefered me to express my sentiment this way: 'Your "5 post before a thread" rule SUCKS. ?

That's very true. But that's not the only (main?) reason. The answer lies in what the Pope *did* with the Swiss Guard, once he'd assembled them...

The reason is that an agreement was made to preserve Switzerland as a neutral royal territory for the future. The papacy are the trustees for this agreement which was executed with all the key royal families in Europe at the time. In exchange for securing Switzerland for this purpose, Australia was handed over on a loan until 2050. There is no official head of state of Switzerland, only a revolving presidency held in turn by each Canton. This is because according to the agreement the land is in trust until the rightful heir returns. The Swiss guards were then appointed at the time as part of the agreement to protect the trustee (papacy)

Yes, thanks for answering something that's already been answered.
Do people read the threads here before they post?
