Ambigrams
      #1425 - 07/02/04 05:21 PM

I was wondering if anyone else has gotten or plans to get any tattoos of John Langdons ambigrams. I myself got Fire tattooed on the inside for my right wrist and plan on getting Air on the same spot on my left wrist.

The ambigrams are beautiful and what better way to segway into a discussion about the book then having a tattoo from it. I don't quite know where I am going to get Earth and Water but I think that I am going to get Illuminati on the base of my neck and the Illuminati Diamond between my shoulder blades.

My uncle says that a tattoo should be in a place where you can show other people and it should have special meaning to you. These ancient elements are very important to me, as I am an avid lover of science and Earth, Fire, Air and Water were the first elements. Also, I have a very scientific mind, If you can prove it to me then I will believe it. These were something that made great sense to the ancient Greeks and Romans.

My tattoos are a tribute to Dan Brown, John Langdon, the ancient Greeks and Romans and science.

I am going to have my buddy take a picture with his digital camera and I will post it in the gallery.

I've thought about it, but I'd want a custom ambigram. I have big ideas for John Langdon, now I'm just waiting for the big money to come through to pay for his work. Plus, well, I'm a sissy and have never had a tattoo before, so I want to think it out carefully. I also know that I won't get it on any obvious body part.

I've been wanting to get a tattoo with mine and my husbands initial's, which also are those of our children. I've been drawing sketches, but didn't like any of them, and since reading A&D, wanted an ambigramatic one. I am MLA and hubby is RGA. Any suggestions?

I have a panda bear on my right lower quadrant of the abdomen and my husband selected the rose which is on my left breast. I get a rose from him every day that way. It never dies, and no maintenance.

My friend did an ambigram of his name (Jeffrey L O'Brien) and I don't have the slightest idea how he did it, I guess he is just that good of an artist.

One trick you might try is writing out your initials and then fliping the paper 180 degrees and writing them over the now upside down initials.

Also, I found if you have problems getting a capital A to work try a lowecase "a" like the one in quotes, sometimes just looking at the letters a different way makes a difference. Also, maybe try working with the initals vertically instead of horizontally and vice versa.
Something I just thought of while typing this would be somehow working it so that when you look at the design you see your own initals, MLA (which are the same as mine, wierd isn't it?) and then when it is flipped you see RGA. That would be a task to accomplish but would be very awesome.

Also, if you look at John Langdons website (johnlangdon.net) were he has the Figure Ground and Rorschach paintings, those might inspire you to go a completely different direction with the initals tattoo.

AAnnAArchy: I also contacted Mr. Langdon in regards to working some sort of treatment for my bands name. He's work is expensive (approx. $2,000) and if we had that we sure would have taken him up on the offer. He seems like the kind of guy who would work with just about anyone to give them something that they could work with. Hopefully someday soon my bandmates and I will have that kind of scratch to hire Mr. Langdon to do some artwork for an album.

It sounded like fun to do, so I played with your initials a little. My husband tells me the symbiotogram needs a bit more work, but this is what I did: M is lower case and it looks like a heart, with the right side longer and curvier. L is upper case with a big loop at the base and the top a little curved inside. A is lower case but big and with two little "horns" so... when turned upside down R is upper case and it's got short funny legs. G is lower case but my husband thinks it looks like an I. A is lower case again...;)
Maybe it gives you an idea... Have fun!

Yeah, I got a quote from him for another board of ours. As soon as I have extra cash and the desire to have needles with ink stuck in me (this may be the tougher part), I'll definitely talk to him again.

In the meantime, Poia's husband did a great logo for this board that we haven't put up yet. I don't know what he does for a living, but he sure is talented. Sheesh, all I can draw are stick figures, and not even good ones at that.

You're awesome, poia, can you scan it? I'll try to draw it, maybe I can get it.

when it comes to getting a tattoo, it really depends on where you get it done. I got mine on the inside of my wrist and that is one of the more painful spots on the body. the closer to the bone, the more it will hurt. my recommendation would be to go with someone or multiple people and just talk to them while you are getting it done. that distracts you from some of the pain but you are not going to get a tattoo without having some discomfort.

once the process gets started the worst part is over. for mine, the outlining hurt the worst because it the needles were closer together and it was kind of a start-stop-start process but when it comes to filling in the outline it is more continuous and the needles are setup in a broad line so that part goes a little quicker.
